The basics

Index-linked interest

Interest is based on an index's performance, up to a cap or participation rate.

Protection from index losses

When the index drops, your balance isn't reduced by the market loss.

Optional lifetime income

Many offer an income rider for an added cost.

Caps and participation rates limit your upside, surrender charges apply if you withdraw too much early, and riders come with added cost and their own rules.

It might fit if…

You want more growth potential than a fixed rate
You don't want market drops to hit your savings
You're planning for income in retirement

Indexed annuity questions

Can I lose money if the market drops?

Index losses aren't credited, so a market drop alone won't lower your balance. Rider fees and early withdrawal charges can.

What's a participation rate?

The share of the index's gain you're credited. At 80%, a 10% index gain would credit 8%, up to any cap.

Do I need an income rider?

Not always. It adds cost, so it mainly makes sense if guaranteed lifetime income is a priority.
